THE WHEEL

Quixote is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersections of consciousness, spirituality, identity, myth, and the influence of subconscious and unconscious states.

Adhering to the romantic/modernist notion “art is a priesthood" Quixote utilizes the symbol of the Wheel as a metaphor for the creative journey and as an aesthetic gestalt, which he attempts to manifest in his writings, drawings, paintings, installations and object creations. 

Four cycles in the Journey of the Wheel

2002 – 2009 / The Calling, Initiation, Pursuit, First Immolation*

·       March 2002 / The Calling. He enters the Fool Cycle of the Wheel - an intense, personal, profound Energy is exchanged and with no artistic training is Initiated as Quixote and commences to work with the only implements available, ballpoint pens and markers. He soon begins creating assemblages with household objects, toys, and found objects. It becomes an obsession.

·       May 2002 / Quixote resigns from his position as a loan officer at Bank of America. He breaks the news to his wife. He is concurrently an English and Art History major at University of CA Irvine.  

·       September 2002 / Having relocated with his family to Family and Graduate Housing at UCI, Quixote has already amassed a startling amount of work. He completes his first series, in ballpoint pen, the FOUR DRAWINGS.

·       March 2003 / The Work continues to evolve in draftsmanship, themes, and imagery. On March 19, 2003, he completes one of his best in response to the US invasion of Iraq, simply entitled March 19, 2003. Selected into first juried group exhibition.

·       August 2004 / Continues to build a body of work but enters the Tower Cycle of the Wheel and five days after completing a mural at UCI is nearly killed in an auto accident, resulting in hospitalization. A month later selected into another juried group exhibition.

·       May 2005 / Embroiled in legal matters, on Memorial Day weekend begins his 30 days at Theo Lacy Correctional Facility. After release, works relentlessly for the next two years.

·     September 2006 / One-month solo exhibition at the Santora in the Santa Ana Arts Complex.

·    June 2007 / Graduates from UCI with degrees in English and Art History. Accepted into more juried group exhibitions.

·    September 2009 / In spiritual crisis, Immolates all previous artwork with the exception of the FOUR DRAWINGS.

2010 – 2012 / The Work, Second Immolation

·       April 2010 / Resumes drawing and writing with an emphasis on the spiritual and enters the Chariot Cycle of the Wheel. He begins a study of the Kabbalah, sketches and drawings for the Tree of Life. Begins work on Kaleidoscope X, which will intermittently continue for years.

·       February 2012 / In extreme spiritual crisis, he immolates all artwork, with the exception of the FOUR DRAWINGS. No work for almost four years.

2016 – 2022 / The Work, Third Immolation

·       March 2016 / Four years later, he returns to the Work with a series of drawings entitled, Tree of Life. Enters the Magician and The Lovers Cycle of the Wheel.

·       September 2016 / Begins the Battle of Evermore, large-scale piece, 7’x4’ drawing, composed of four individual panels.

·       October 2016 / Begins his play Secure Storage.

·   June 2017 / Writes and directs (under C.J. Haine) the co-produced, Secure Storage, at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. The play receives a Pick of the Fringe and an Encore Producer’s Award. His drawing Battle of Evermore is selected to be exhibited at Fringe Central.

·      2018 – 2019 / Two Vision Quests result in a renewed awareness and interest in plant medicine. The Work continues. Writes three more plays (gods & Vicodin, Hump, with an actor staged reading of it at the Complex Theatre in Hollywood, CA) and Yellow Balloon. Begins studying spec scripts. Selected for group exhibitions in Santa Ana, Long Beach and Los Angeles based galleries.

·       2020 -2022 / Covid and The Get Down / the Work continues within decadent excesses what Quixote refers to, along with Anthony and Alex, as the "Get Down" and Quixote enters the Devil and Death Cycle of the Wheel. Overdose and death of good friend Anthony S. in February 2022.

·       October 2022 / After six years of Work including a mural, juried exhibitions, and work on Kaleidoscope X, again experiencing extreme spiritual crisis, he immolates his social media presence and all artwork including the Battle of Evermore, Kaleidoscope X and the FOUR DRAWINGS. He will not work for almost another three years.

2025 – Present / The Work

·       June 2025 / Resumes writing fiction, writes two short stories and begins work on another play. Quixote unknowingly enters into the Hermit Cycle of the Wheel.

·       July 2025 / Resume the work, Tree of Life.  Designs for the proposed site-specific installation, Tree of Life, and a copy of Kaleidoscope X are located in old files. Tree of Life schematics are based on Quixote’s sketches and instructions to Emanuel Hernandez, which were executed in Mexico City in 2018.

·       October 2025 / Vision Quest / the Calling Renewed, Volitional Intent, he reenters the Fool Cycle of the Wheel.

·       November 2025 / Reengages in social media platforms. Intensive work on the final editing of Kaleidoscope X. A new series of drawings.

 ·     February 2026 / COMING: Indie Publication of Kaleidoscope X: Script for an American Tall Tale.

 ·     February 2026 / COMING: Profile and art to be published in Abstractics, online art magazine.

*With the exception of a few digitally saved photographs and an old social media account, the only work that remains from 2002 – 2022 are pieces that were given to friends and family members before Immolation. According to Quixote’s representative this “sadly accounted for the loss of hundreds of drawings, paintings, writings, collages and assemblages.” 2025 work is available at www.quixotesartandwriting.com
